The Foster Grandparent program (FGP) recruits, trains and places low-income seniors, age 60 and over, into educational and care-oriented settings to assist children. The children receive the benefit of one-to-one tutoring, to assist with overcoming learning challenges they may be having.
The Foster Grandparent Program is part of the National Senior Service Corps, a nationwide network of national service programs that provide older Americans with the opportunity to apply their life experiences to meeting community needs.
The College of Southern Idaho serves as the grantee for the Foster Grandparent Program. The program is housed in the Office on Aging. Community and service organizations which support the development of successful children, public school sites, and Head Start partner with the Foster Grandparent Program to serve as volunteer workstation sites.
VOLUNTEER BENEFITS
For their service, Foster Grandparents receive a tax-free stipend of $2.65 an hour, reimbursement for transportation expense, annual physical examinations, meals, and excess accident and liability insurance during service. This income does NOT interfere with any local, state or federal programs which provide support, including social security.
